hand crafted wood joints

conscious & sustainable construction

Welcome

We are Falling Acorn, a group of craftsmen who not only take great pride in our work but also view it as a form of art, using what nature has offered to build structures that will last for generations.

We aim to minimize toxins in our building environments by using natural products. We have been involved in straw bale houses, light clay/straw infill builds, and earthen plasters.

Our focus is on small print houses (500 - 3000 sq. ft.) although there is no project too big or too small.

Meet the team.

Timber Framing

This is an age-old method of using heavy timbers to create framed structures, jointed together with mortise and tenon, and secured with wooden pegs rather than nails, screws, or metalwork. These well-crafted wooden structures are remarkably strong and are able to last for centuries.

At Falling Acorn, we use locally sourced timber whenever possible. This creates valuable relationships, both personally and economically, and allows for a consistent quality and end product. We make precision hand cuts, fit tight joints, and strive for sustainable building.

We offer full design/build services and are a licensed Class A contractor in Virginia. We can be your General Contractor if you are within a 2 hour radius of Lynchburg, VA. Our house frames can be developed off a basic floor plan but having some flexibility in shape and room sizes can simplify a house frame. We also cut and sometimes install timber elements all across the USA. From porches to great room trusses, pergolas, gable elements, brackets/corbels, and more.

custom sawmill/

wood supplies

Many people desire to use timbers from their own land, which is possible if you have the additional time and quality timber. We have a portable sawmill that we use for custom sawing. If we discover your timbers are not sufficient for large timbers, there are further options for smaller dimensioned elements and cutting braces, even out of curvy trees!

Generally, we prefer to use timber from within a small radius of our projects, saving us cost and allowing a smaller carbon footprint to transport. We can readily source the following species locally:

White Oak
Red Oak
Eastern White Pine
Southern Yellow Pine
Hickory
Tulip Poplar
Ash

General Contracting

As a Class A Contractor, we have the authorization to construct or deconstruct any building or structure that is regulated under the building code. As a General Contractor, we are tasked with management and execution of a the building process, accomplished best by clear communication and proper knowledge of the order of the building process. We have been licensed since 2007, offering seasoned experience, a comprehensive knowledge of industry standards/best practices, executing efficiency, and achieving high quality builds. Most of our frames are designed in house and stamped by a structural engineer.
